The Bois Family's trip to England

April 29, 1999 - London

We woke up in good shape but too late for breakfast at the hotel, so we took the tube to the Tower of London and had lunch there.

Here's Adam and Danusia across the street from the Tower.  We Americans tend to think the world started in 1492 but parts of the Tower, in the middle of this modern metropolis, are older than that.

The Tower of London sits on the north bank of the Thames.  Before going in, we walked down to the river and got this shot of me and Adam leaning against the railing.

At one time, I thought the Tower of London was the Tower Bridge, which is not the case at all.  The Bridge was named after the Tower.  It is stunning, the postcards you've seen don't do it justice.

Inside the Tower, which is actually a collection of buildings of which only some are truly towers, we walked on top of the castle-like walls.

Even though it was a beautiful day and there were plenty of other tourists around, sometimes we had the place to ourselves.  Still, Adam preferred the solitude of a guard's turret.

The arsenal in the Tower of London is decorated with arms of all sorts.  These pillars are ringed with ancient pistols.
This tower is called the Jewel House.  It's where the Crown Jewels are kept.  Taking pictures of the jewels isn't allowed but I can easily describe them in one word:  shiny.
After poking around the Tower of London, one of England's top tourist sites, we walked to a mecca of a different sort:  the Bass Centre, the world's largest bass guitar store.  I saw lots of things at good prices, but shipping them back home would have killed me.

At the tube stop near the store, the turnstiles were wide open and there was no attendant around.  There was no need to use our tickets, which was good because we had walked farther than we thought.  We were outside the zone that the tickets covered.  We would have had to buy new tickets to get us back to the inner part of the city.

At any rate, we took the tube to Westminster.  Here's a fine picture of my silhouette in front of Parliament.

From there, we walked up river to the Tate Gallery and saw the Jackson Pollock exhibit.  Adam, the teenager among us, wasn't impressed but Danusia and I enjoyed it.

We tried to eat dinner in a pub near the hotel, but children aren't allowed in pubs after 6:00PM.  It turns out that this is true only in cities, we didn't have any trouble at country pubs.
