The Bois Family's trip to England

May 3, 1999 - Cambridge

On Monday morning, Sarah packed a picnic basket with meats, cheeses and bread, yogurt and fruit, a bottle of wine and a bottle of water.  We piled in the car and headed south to Cambridge, arriving around noontime.  We spread a blanket in a park near the university and leisurely munched away.  It was a bank holiday so the park had plenty of other picnickers.  The wine and the sun made me sleepy.

The sun quickly went away though, and the stereotypical gray sky of England took over.  Having put the picnic basket back in the car, we walked over to the university and downtown Cambridge.

We tried talking Adam into getting good grades so he could go to a school like this, but he thought it would be too much work.

Besides, a chapel built by Henry VIII doesn't impress a 14-year-old.

Here's the back of the chapel and the adjacent building.  This area is known as The Backs because you walk along looking at the backs of all the buildings.  Between us and the buildings is the River Cam, though all you can see of it is the people walking near it.

This is a better view of the River Cam.  The long boats are called punts and you push them with poles, like you would a gondola.
Here are more punters punting.  You can buy rides or rent a punt and do it yourself.  We saw several amateur punters fall in the drink.

I regret now not renting a punt, but if we had, at least one of us would have taken a swim.  Most likely, me.

We strolled around town and eventually made our way to the car, via The Backs.  I took this shot of Sarah and Al and think it looks more artistic in black and white.  Ah, young love.
