The Bois Family Trip to Athens

March 15 - 22, 2001

The afternoon of March 19, 2001
Sounion

It took forever for our bus to get out of Athens and I fell asleep.  Danusia told me later that the countryside was beautiful but even if I had been awake, I wouldn't have been able to take pictures of it.  This was a city bus, not a tour bus, and the windows hadn't been washed in a while.

I woke up about half an hour before we arrived at Sounion, and the scenery was indeed beautiful.  It reminded us both of Scotland - rugged hills strewn with rocks and little vegetation - only Scotland is green and Greece is brown.

When we got to Sounion, this dog was waiting for us.

Sounion is the southernmost tip of Attica, which means it's pretty much the southeast corner of Europe.  Greece's islands go on for hundreds of miles but this is as far as you can walk.
And on top of this point of land stand the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon.
Only about half of the temple's original columns remain.  It was built in 444 B.C. on the site of an even older temple.
Danusia found it was a good spot to sit and enjoy the wind and waves.
If you're going to build a shrine to the god of the sea, this is the place to do it.
