The Bois Family Trip to Athens

March 15 - 22, 2001

The morning of March 21, 2001
Poros

The tour guide met us at the hotel at 7:15 and put us on a bus.
After picking up some other people - an adventure that included maneuvering
a huge bus through the narrow streets south of the Acropolis - we drove to
the docks at Paleo Phalero and set sail at 8:30.

Our first stop would be Poros, but we passed Aegina on the way.

Here's the southern end of the island.
That's the Peloponnese in the distance.

A commuter hydrofoil passed us, going about twice our speed.  I had wanted to take one of these but read that the ride is bumpy and the windows are small like an airplane.  It's meant for people going somewhere in a hurry, not tourists.  However, it seemed to glide smoothly across the water, it didn't appear like a rough ride at all.  Maybe next time.

The island of Poros is separated from the Peloponnese by only 200 meters.  As we sailed towards the dock, Poros was on our left and the Peloponnese was on our right.

And the town of Poros was straight ahead.

On the Peleponnesian side, this dirt road traversed across a steep hill.
The clock tower on top of the hill, the symbol of Poros, was surrounded by scaffolding.
After the boat docked, we skipped the gift shops and climbed a staircase that took us up the hill to the clock tower.
At the top of the hill, we also found a small neighborhood of colorfully painted alleyways, potted plants, a small church and a school.  It was recess time.
We made our way back down to the shore and bought some drinks in a grocery store.  The fruits and vegetables looked very fresh and healthy.

We sat down on a bench near this monument.  Those are two fish on it, so we presume it has something to do with the sea.

As we walked back to the boat, we turned to look back up the hill.
This ferry goes back and forth between Poros and the Peloponnese all day long.
Our boat pulled away from the dock and continued through the channel between Poros and the Peloponnese.  I took these pictures from the top deck of the boat.
You probably can't read the sign in the mezzanine window of this hotel we passed, so I blew it up.  It was one of two Internet cafés we passed on our way out of Poros, further proof that Europe is more wired than North America.
Once out into open waters, we passed this island with the ruins of some kind of fortress.

This is looking back on the sound we just sailed through.

Next stop, Hydra.
