The intrepid climbers reach the peak.
Danusia, Cheryl, Al and Bill
| The clouds broke a little on our way down and I took this picture hoping to catch the mountain on the island of Scarba in the distance. You can't see it at all, but the photo might give you an idea of the terrain. That's Adam, Cheryl and Al ahead of me in the center of the picture. | ![]() |
Cheryl has since sent me these pictures of Luing in the sunlight: one with a good view of Scarba and another of Cullipool, including Cheryl's garden.

This may look like a Monet, but it's actually some of the cliffs behind Cullipool. You can just barely see where the slate was quarried out of the cliffs. The house on the left is where Cheryl lives. |
| The beaches near the quarries are covered with discarded slate. It makes for slippery walking but a local dog who followed us around had no problem with it. | ![]() |

And I include this picture not because it shows Al's profile and Cheryl's forehead, but because it shows what a track is like. One lane, with occasional passing places. |

| We said our good-byes to Cheryl and left Luing at a more leisurely pace than on our trip to the island. The ferry from Luing goes to the isle of Seil and this is the bridge from Seil to the mainland. It's one lane wide and is called the Bridge Over The Atlantic. | ![]() |

The weather was too wet and gray for photography, as it usually is
on the west coast of Scotland. We passed through Oban and crossed
Loch Etive and Loch Leven without being able to see much of anything.
After lunch at a chippy in Fort William, we continued east towards Aviemore.
The sun came out a bit in the afternoon though it was still overcast. We passed this castle on Loch Laggan. You can just see it on the shore on the far side of the loch. At least, I think it was a castle, it may have been a small hotel or a large house. We don't know for sure but it's definitely made of stone. |
Guess who loves traveling?
Danusia, somewhere on the A86 west of Aviemore.

We checked into our hotel in Aviemore, but Sarah wasn't feeling very well. She and Al stayed in for the night while Danusia, Adam and I walked into town for dinner. At this point, the jet lag was pretty well gone and we started to realize that the sun goes down much later when you're this far north. It was still light out as we walked back to the hotel at 9:00 PM. There were rabbits running around the hotel's gardens.
We caught the end of the Euro 2000 match between England and Portugal on telly before turning in. We had to cheer for Portugal because it is the Scottish tradition to support anyone but England. In fact, the final score was Portugal 3, England 2.
