The Bois and Read Families' trip to Scotland

The Evening of June 16, 2000: Stornoway

The drive south to Stornoway was amazing because the air was so clear.  We could see all the way to mainland Scotland, which Al reckoned was 70 miles away.  To east and northeast, the land faded from sight.  We couldn't really determine any landmarks, but it's possible we could see all the way to Cape Wrath, Scotland's northern tip, which would have been about 100 miles away.

Back in Stornoway, we had dinner at Patrick and Alice's and the conversation got around to Al and Sarah's wedding.  Sarah's favorite part was the ceilidh - traditional Scottish dancing.  She and Al tried to demonstrate it in the kitchen but there wasn't enough room, so we moved to the living room and pushed the furniture out of the way.  There still wasn't enough room, especially when Patrick and Alice joined it.

Alice opened the windows, put the stereo speakers on the sill and everyone danced on the lawn.

Pretty soon we were all in on the act, even the American with two left feet.
Adam, however, didn't participate.  He ran upstairs to take pictures out the window of the crazy adults dancing on the lawn in bright sunshine at ten o'clock at night.

The neighbors were peeking out their windows, too.

Here's a video of Alice and Patrick having a whale of a time.

Eventually, everyone except Alice was too tired to dance.

This is not some strange Scottish dance.  Sarah's joints were hurting after all the dancing so she asked that we drag her around the lawn to stretch them out.
She seemed to enjoy it.
