The Story of the Bonus Track
At the end of The Beatles' Abbey Road, there's a section where Lennon, McCartney
and Harrison trade short guitar licks over a two-chord backing track. I don't know if
their riffs were improvised or written, but I like the idea of many people taking turns
and decided to do something similar.
So one of the first things I did in the studio was record a bare backing track using
only A and D, coincidentally the same chords The Beatles used. Whenever guitar players came into the
studio and finished the work they knew about, I'd spring a surprise on them.
I'd give them a brief listen to the backing track and then ask them to play a short
solo in A and then another in D. At first, most of them thought I was kidding but they
all took a whack at it. I kept whatever they did. Everything you hear is a first take
because we didn't do any second takes.
After everyone on the CD had done their two licks (and somehow Dale got four), we
pasted them together in an order that seemed to make sense. Here's a list of the order
of the players and the different guitars they played.
